Why Job Titles Matter for Careers

Why Job Titles Matter for CareersWhy Job Titles Matter for CareersJobtitles are badges of authority. Not getting the correct job titleappropriate to your position, duties, authority, and achievements can undermine your standing both inside your company and with key outsiders such as clients. Additionally, elend getting the job title that you are due can hinder your pursuit of future career opportunities, both inside your current firm and as a potential outside hire by other employers. You probably will be seen unfairly as someone who actually is at a lower level of achievement than the one you have attained. Please also see our closely related article on the matter ofwhat job descriptions mean. Job Title Scenarios In one scenario, an employee gets a de facto promotion but does not get an upgrade in job title to that of the former incumbent. This may signal either a downgrade in the importance of that job, or be utilized as a not so subtle device by a company to lower the level o fcompensationassociated with that position. Sometimes, people are hired into firms or enticed intochanging jobswithin firms based on promises about future upgrades in a job title. Unfortunately, where these agreements are purely verbal, as they often are, there is the risk that management may renege on them, even by claiming never to have made them. The danger is especially high when there is a change of supervisor for the employee in question, and the new manager denies being bound by his predecessors promises. Difficulties in getting an upgrade in job title may occur for worthy employees even if they do not lead automatically to higher compensation. Managers may be using the denial of upgrade strictly as a means to assert their authority. Another job title scenario is one in which your management grants you an upgrade in job title, but your human resources (orHR) records do not reflect it. When this occurs, it is typically an error of omission, but in some Machiavellian firms, it can be intentional. A case study follows. Case Study in Job Title Errors An actual case study in human resources (or HR) errors involved someone hired with the explicit understanding that he would get an Assistant Vice President (or AVP) title immediately upon starting work with a new employer, a leading financial services firm. During the course of over 4 years in a position at corporate headquarters, that person got every indication that he indeed welches an AVP. This included the title on his business cards, his eligibility for an office rather than a cubicle, the design of the nameplate on his office, the amount of vacation time to which he was entitled, and even the title as it appeared on various personalized human resources documents in his possession. After those 4 years at headquarters, this person moved to a job in a different division of the firm, a separate legal entity with its own human resources department and payroll system. More than a full year after that, he w as utterly surprised when his current boss congratulated him on being upgraded to an AVP title. When his human resources records were transferred with him to his new division, an indication of his previous possession of the AVP title inexplicably had failed to come across as well. When the employee pointed out that he already was an AVP from day one with the firm, his current manager investigated and determined that, somehow, there were errors in how the personnel records were maintained, and in how they were transmitted internally. Luckily, the employee quickly was able to get an upgrade to full Vice President instead, which actually was long overdue by that point in his career, given both his total tenure with the firm and his performance to date, which had merited stellar reviews from all previous managers as well.

Guy fired for being rude claims rudeness is part of his French heritage

Guy fired for being rude claims rudeness is part of his French heritageGuy fired for being rude claims rudeness is part of his French heritageHow civil do we need to be with coworkers? One French waiter in Canada experienced the limits of workplace incivility when he welches fired for allegedly acting aggressive, rude and combative to his coworkers. And now hes suing his former employer for violating his human rights, arguing that he was not rude - hes just French.Guillaume Rey, a waiter at Milestones Bar + Grill in Vancouver, filed a complaintagainst his parent company, after he was fired for being too harsh towards a server, who was borderline in tears after Rey aggressively checked up on whether or not a server was doing the assigned work, according to the restaurants emails about Reys behavior.French waiter claims accusationsare discriminationIn his version of what happened, Rey contends that the accusations lobbed against him are discrimination against my culture, which tends to be more direct and expressive. He said that his direct, honest and professional personality is a result of the high standards he learned in the French hospitality industry.TheBritish Columbia Human Rights Tribunal is willing to hear Rey out on his French rudeness discrimination theory. Tribunal member Devyn Cousineau did not outright dismiss his complaint, allowing Reys case to move forward. But in order for Rey to win, he will need to do his homework and explain the French stereotype that is being held against him unfairly.Mr. Rey will have to explain what it is about his French heritage that would result in behavior that people misinterpret as a violation of workplace standards of acceptable conduct, Cousineau wrote in her decision.

5 Tips to Fill Out a Short Resume

5 Tips to Fill Out a Short Resume 5 Tips to Fill Out a Short Resume Modern resumes are best presented in a clean, concise, and uniform style that clearly represents a candidate’s key skills, capabilities, and achievements. Sometimes, though, you come up a little short. The tips below will help you fill out a short resume into something more polished and well rounded. Here are five tips on how to fill out a short resume! Watch your formatting. This is the key component to making your resume look visually appealing and uniform. Keep a sharp eye on things like font, size, spacing, placement, etc., to make sure everything is consistent. To fill out your resume, use fonts such as Palatino Linotype or Arial with a size of 10.5 to 12 depending on how much content is in your resume. You can also expand the spaces between lines as much as 1.15, but don’t go any higher than that otherwise the resume looks too juvenile. Choose the right content layout. Combine a good layout of your content with precise formatting and you have a winning resume. From top to bottom you will want a clear value statement that highlights your strongest attributes, followed by a core competencies section, which often includes a few columns of buzzwords that reflect your key strengths. Adding to that, you can incorporate your key achievements section and then the rest of your resume is dedicated to your task-based information and designations. Use achievements to give your resume value. Depending on your experience, the layout can be presented in a few different ways. However, what is often most successful is creating a section dedicated solely to your “Key Achievements” or “Career Highlights.” If you’re entry-level in your career, you will likely have a key achievements headline that outlines your major project work from school, internships, or any great achievements if you’ve already broken into the field. Normally four or five bullet points for that section is appropriate as you don’t want your resume to look like just a list of bullets. Achievements can be anything from relevant projects you have done in school, to assisting in developments at your internships or your current position. Be sure to illustrate the value in the achievement. Make sure you have your five Ws, Hows, and So Whats. Part of the reason your resume may come up short is because you have too many soft skills in your resume. What we mean by soft skills are phrases or words such as: I have great software skills or I have a hard work ethic. These qualities are certainly valuable, but you need proof or examples to truly show the employer you are capable of what you say. If you have great customer service skills, provide examples of how you have helped customers get what they need. If you are mechanically inclined, provide examples of tricky projects you worked on where you were able to successfully resolve the problem. Use buzzwords. Since most job applications are done online, your resume will likely be processed through an Application Tracking System (ATS), which will scan your document for keywords and phrases it has incorporated into the job post in order to determine if you match the qualifications. Comb through these job posts carefully to catch any important keywords you can incorporate into your resume, which will also contribute to filling up the document. But don’t make anything up just to match the job post. Make sure you are familiar with the qualifications and key terms. If employers don’t find out you’re lying about your resume at first hand, they certainly will during the interview when they ask you about it. You’d be surprise how these little tricks can work to your advantage in creating a resume that looks like it’s chock full of substantial content. Don’t get too crazy with the formatting, but tweaking the spacing and font here and there will help expand things a bit. Also make sure the layout is clean and uniform so that the achievement-based content is easy for the eyes to follow, while still including those five Ws. Finally, keywords make all the difference when your resume goes through the ATS system- possibly the determining factor between you and another candidate for an interview. How to Work When Youre Dealing With a Personal Crisis - The Muse

How to Work When Youre Dealing With a Personal Crisis - The Muse How to Work When Youre Dealing With a Personal Crisis If you’ve made your career a top priority, you’re no doubt a pro at honoring your professional commitments and continually striving for excellence. You may have even made sacrifices to succeed in the workplace- like not calling in sick when you probably should have or putting your social life on the back burner to stay late and produce the best possible results at the office. But how do you keep those career ambitions on track then when a major life event suddenly rocks your world? And I’m talking big stuff- like a family member is diagnosed with cancer, you find yourself in serious financial trouble, or your fiancé calls off the wedding. Crises like these happen to all of us, can strike at any time, and present a major challenge to staying on top of your workload. Professional responsibilities that you typically excel at with ease- like delivering projects of time, contributing killer ideas to every brainstorm, or making clients happy- can seem like insurmountable obstacles when a personal crisis leaves you on the brink of tears at your desk. If you find yourself in the midst of a difficult time, it may seem impossible to carry on as a top performer at work. At the same time, you know it’s important to keep your career on track, not to mention maintain a semblance of routine and normalcy through the rough patch. To find the right balance, here are a few tips to navigate the workplace while going through a major disruption in your personal life. Do: Think Before You Share You may feel torn about whether you should talk to your colleagues about your personal crisis. Before divulging the details, think about the benefits and drawbacks of sharing. If you’re experiencing health issues, for example, you’ll probably need to disclose some specifics about your situation to your boss and team, since you may require time out of the office for doctors’ appointments. If your job involves daily interface with clients, you’ll also need to consider if you want to tell them about what’s going on directly or if (and what) you’d like your team to tell them on your behalf. Also consider what’s normal for your office. For example, if you have the kind of work environment where everyone’s personal life is an open book, it may feel natural to share more about what’s going on. If your office is uber professional, it may be more culturally appropriate to only disclose details though a formalized process that involves approaching your manager or the HR department. Keep in mind that if you opt to share details about your personal challenges, colleagues may offer advice or ask questions. Decide ahead of time what you’re willing to discuss and what you’d rather keep private. Don’t: Forget to Set Boundaries with Family To successfully manage a crisis, you have to know when to set limits- even with the people closest to you. During this time, relatives and friends may want to reach out to you during business hours to offer help or, if it’s something that affects them as well, look for support themselves. Let them know whether or not you’ll be able to answer the phone while at work, when they can reach you, or what types of emergencies they can (or cannot) interrupt you with. Do: Give Yourself Space Any type of crisis involves grief, and how you deal with that sorrow will ultimately determine how quickly you bounce back. If you suffer a serious setback, such as the death of a family member, don’t be afraid to take time away from work to cope and work through your loss. Rather than heading back to the office the morning after a red-eye flight home from a funeral service across the country, for instance, consider tackling only the most important tasks from home- then spending the rest of the day catching up on rest and cooking yourself a meal. When you’re back in the office, be aware of the amount of mental energy you devote to dwelling on what’s going on in your personal life while you’re at work. Excessive worrying isn’t healthy or productive. Instead, set aside an occasional 15-minute window during the workday to clear your head and do something that feels emotionally cathartic, like taking a walk or journaling. Prioritizing self-care is crucial when you’re experiencing turmoil, and your professional life will benefit in the long run. You’ll return to work rested, more emotionally level-set, and better prepared to make good judgments- both on the job and back at home. Do: Practice Self-Compassion Getting back into a groove at work after experiencing a major life shock can be challenging, so remember to treat yourself with kindness. A personal crisis can throw off your focus, so if you’re noticing brain fog, don’t berate yourself for not being productive enough- accept that it’s only temporary and do what you can within your current limits. Often, this means organizing yourself and planning ahead as much as possible. When you’re short on mental energy, breaking projects down into small, manageable, and easily attainable milestones can help sustain your focus. Maybe, for example, you make a goal of completing four tasks on your to-do list, then allow yourself to check in with your family or take some time to think about what’s going on. By working toward realistic goals, you give yourself a shot of positive reinforcement that encourages you to stay focused throughout the day. Don’t: Forget About Your Benefits Many of us work for the same company for years and yet have no idea of the benefits available to us. Does your company offer childcare, counseling, or legal services? Many of these lesser-known benefits can ease the financial and emotional burden when a personal crisis strikes. And don’t be afraid to go beyond what’s readily available to you. Be proactive and explore if and how the company can accommodate your unique situation. Devise a list of things that would maximize your productivity during your crisis- such as working remotely while you visit family or reducing your hours for a couple weeks- and ask your boss if he or she can grant your requests. Much like negotiating terms of employment, there's often room for creative solutions during a crisis- but only if you ask. We all go through our share of dark times in life, and there’s no shame in putting work aside to deal with life-changing matters. Navigating the transition back to work with grace will not only benefit your career and how you’re perceived in the workplace, but can also help you start on the path to emotional recovery. Benefits of Cloud Computing for Small Business Finance Functions Management Resources

Benefits of Cloud Computing for Small Business Finance Functions Management Resources Benefits of Cloud Computing for Small Business Finance Functions Management Resources Similar to the desktop computing revolution of the 1980s and 1990s, cloud computing is transforming how business today gets done - and at organizations of all sizes. In the latest Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function report  from Robert Half and  Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF), more than half of U.S. financial leaders said their companies are either already taking advantage of the cloud in their businesses (24 percent) or plan to do so soon (27 percent). Small businesses have been a little slower to make the move, according to the report: Just over half (54 percent) of these firms still opt to keep all of their data in-house. However, the tide is turning, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for small business owners to ignore the potential benefits of the cloud. Here are just few ways that cloud computing can enhance small business operations: 1. Cost reduction A key advantage of cloud computing is cost savings. And as your business grows, you can expand your use of cloud services - without extra hardware purchases and with little or no software costs. The cloud helps small businesses to preserve office resources, too. That’s why many companies - of all sizes - now choose to outsource their payroll and tax duties using cloud-based computing systems. Software-as-a-Service solutions also use the cloud for departmental applications like human resources management software. 2. Simplified information sharing One chief financial officer interviewed for the Benchmarking report said that, for accountants, “the spreadsheet cannot be beaten” when it comes to technological tools. “There will always be a place for some type of worksheet tool to capture data and convert it into actionable information,” the CFO said. However, the spreadsheet doesn’t necessarily have to reside locally. If you want to make it easier for your staff to share information using the tool they love most, you can still look to the cloud for a solution. For example, Microsoft SharePoint provides complimentary cloud-based services, including spreadsheets, for creating recurring reports. And the Office Online suite or a file storage service like Microsoft OneDrive, Google Docs and Apple’s iCloud Drive can make collaborating on shared spreadsheets and documents much simpler, too. 3. Better collaboration Without question, cloud computing enhances staff mobility. When your firm’s files and information are stored remotely via the cloud, working on the go is a snap. Cloud-based computing provides companies with a continuous, mobile-ready connection that syncs data instantly wherever there’s Internet access. You and your employees can travel, or work from home, and still have access to (and the ability to modify and save) all stored files from any device in any location with a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. You can also collaborate more effectively with contractors and clients, no matter where they are located. Additional upside for your staff: Automatic software updates from the cloud are routine and regular. This helps employees stay productive because they don’t have to spend time installing new application versions and updating their devices. 4. Data management There were early concerns about the potential security risks of cloud-based computing, and according to the Benchmarking report, those concerns still linger for some financial executives. One CFO interviewed for the report said, “I’m not 100 percent comfortable with having my company’s information up in the cloud just yet.” However, safer data handling is actually one of the cloud’s many  security benefits. The cloud provides an added layer of protection above data stored on laptops or USB drives, which can easily be stolen or lost. There are still compliance issues to be mindful of with the cloud - especially around mandates like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Payment Card Industry and Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). But leading cloud providers, and other expert consultants, can help you to ensure your business meets relevant regulatory policies and processes. Another benefit: Cloud-based computing lets you back up your business data off-site. If bad weather or a power outage prevents your team from working at the office temporarily, they can still access necessary electronic files from any location - and from their mobile devices. Disaster recovery is also more manageable. There are many ways for your small business to employ cloud computing today - and as the organization grows. You can look to business systems and IT consultants for assistance with evaluating, implementing  and getting the most value from cloud-based solutions for your firm. How to Survive a Panel Interview

How to Survive a Panel Interview How to Survive a Panel Interview It is becoming increasingly common for job seekers to meet with panels of three or more decision makers in one interview.Over the past year I have noticed a growing trend toward panel or group interviews. It is becoming increasingly common for job seekers to meet with panels of three or more decision makers in one interview. Many job seekers approach panel interviews with trepidation. But with a bit of preparation, it can be a very efficient and rewarding process. Here are a few tips on how to survive a panel interview. Focus on the positive aspects of the panel interview. A panel interview is like any other interview, but with a larger audience. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that “all eyes are on you.” Instead, try to think of the efficiencies that the panel interview affords you. Candidates who participate in panel interviews generally go through fewer rounds of interviews before the hiring decision is made. A panel interview decreases the likelihood that you will be asked redundant questions by different interviewers and gives you less need to “recycle” your interview strategy at multiple meetings. Pay extra attention to the details. Arriving late to an interview or showing up with mismatched socks is bad enough during a one-on-one interview. These errors in judgment will certainly be magnified if they are observed by a panel of interviewers at the same point in time. When you meet each person on the panel, ask for a business card. Before the interview begins, place the cards in front of you and facing in the direction of the appropriate person to help you remember the names of the people you are interviewing with. Refer to each person by name during the conversation to personalize your responses and build rapport with the group. Don’t assume that the most senior person is the decision maker. Frequently business leaders rely on their team to help make decisions about candidates; be sure to include everyone in the conversation. If one person in the group asks you a question, begin your answer by responding to that person, but then make eye contact with the others to build rapport with everyone in the room. Try to size up the agenda of everyone in the group. The needs of the marketing, operations, and sales teams will be different, so make sure you can showcase stories of success that will resonate with the different business heads you are interviewing with. Be cognizant of the group dynamic. The panel interview gives you a better idea of how the group interacts and works as a team. These subtle but important cues are often missed during one on one interviews. Observing the group dynamic during the interview phase may help you make better decisions about the company culture and how well you would fit in with the team. Send everyone in the group a thank you letter and make sure each letter is unique. The thank you letter is a great tool for reconnecting with the hiring team, but, in order to be seen as authentic, you need to communicate your thanks to each person individually and avoid redundant content. Try to focus on one key point of exchange with each person you interviewed with. It’s a bit of extra work to mind multiple decision makers, but in the long run it’s worth it. You’re on your way to landing your next position in less time, with equal effort.

How to Start Studying for FAR Section of the CPA Exam

How to Start Studying for FAR Section of the CPA Exam How to Start Studying for FAR Section of the CPA Exam The Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) section of the Certified Public Accountant exam is taken first more often than any of the other sections, for two main reasons: the content seems the most familiar to the candidate, since it relates closely to so many of the classes necessary to get an accounting degree, and because it is because it is the biggest and most intimidating section. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has this to say about the FAR section: “The Financial Accounting and Reporting section tests knowledge and understanding of the financial reporting framework used by business enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, and governmental entities.” Based on that description, the section covers everything learned in every financial and cost/managerial accounting class you took in school, as well as the governmental/non-profit accounting class you hopefully took. Governmental/non-profit is a pretty significant portion of the content covered (between 16% and 24%), so even though you probably only took one class on that topic, make sure to give that area the attention that it deserves. What the FAR Section Includes Topics covered in FAR include: comparisons between GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), account classification, general ledger (GL) entries, financial calculations, reconciliation of GL to subsidiary ledgers, account reconciliations and analysis, consolidating and eliminating entries, financial statement preparation and analysis, financial ratios, Securities and Exchange Commission reporting, accounting estimates, and application of accounting principles. The FAR section is four hours long. It consists of three multiple-choice testlets (sections), each containing 30 questions, and one testlet with seven tasked-based simulations. The difficulty of the questions in testlets 2 and 3 is based on how well you answered the questions in section 1. Don’t be discouraged by getting tough questions in the second and third testlets  since that means you are answering questions correctly. The tasked-based simulations are just what they sound like - short tasks where the same knowledge is required as in the multiple choice sections but is applied in a practical manner. The simulations may ask you to calculate some figures or complete a reconciliation. Studying for the CPA Exam Students choose different methods to study for the CPA exam, and youll certainly experiment to find the best approach for you. However, you should make sure to work on multiple practice problems - lots and lots of them. Honestly, you can never do too many practice problems, especially in areas where youre weak. But its also the perfect way to evaluate your preparation for the overall exam, and to see if you need to make any adjustments when studying for the other three sections. Also, your motivation and study discipline will be at their highest when you first start studying, so use that to your advantage and tackle the hardest part first. Learn About Amelia Earharts Lockheed Model 10 Electra

Learn About Amelia Earharts Lockheed Model 10 Electra Learn About Amelia Earharts Lockheed Model 10 Electra The Lockheed Electra Model 10 is most famous as the aircraft Amelia Earhart flew on her attempted around-the-world flight in 1937. As most people know, the aircraft disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean with Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. The location of Earharts Electra has been a mystery ever since, though researchers in 2018 released a report claiming bones found on an island in the Pacific in 1940 are a match for Earhart. In 1932, with the expertise of renowned engineer Clarence Kelly Johnson, the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation designed the Lockheed Electra 10A, a state-of-the-art machine for its time. Lockheed intended the aircraft to be used ?commercially, and it could hold up to 10 passengers with a two-person crew. The Model 10 (not to be confused with the Electra L-188, a turboprop that came much later) was first flown in 1934, just three years before Earharts famous last flight. Airlines that operated the Lockheed Model 10 Electra include Northwest Airlines, Braniff Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Eastern Airlines, and National Airlines. The Model 10 Electra was flown by many international airlines, including operators in Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and the U.K. The military also favored the Electra. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Spain, and U.K. militaries, as well as the United States military, had Electra Model 10 aircraft in their fleets. The Design The Model 10 Electra was a twin-engine all-aluminum aircraft with retractable landing gear, variable-pitch propellers, and twin tail fins and rudders. The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation designed multiple variants of the Electra Model 10, ranging from the Model 10A to the Model 10E. The 10E model was given a more powerful engine  and was the model flown by  Earhart. The Electra was meant to compete better with other popular aircraft that were entering airline service around the same time period. The Model 10 Electra was smaller and cheaper to operate than competing aircraft made by Boeing and Douglas. As one of the first multi-engine aircraft used in the airlines, it did fairly well in a market flooded with single-engine aircraft. Johnson completed the wind tunnel testing for the Model 10 Electra and was responsible for the addition of the extra tail fin on the aircraft, which became a distinctive feature. Johnson then went on to take part in the designs of aircraft such as the U-2 and SR-71. Performance and Specifications Engines: The 400 horsepower Pratt Whitney R-985 engine was installed on the Model 10A aircraft, and the 10E had the more powerful 600 horsepower Pratt Whitney R-1340 Wasp SH31 engines.Cruise speed: 190-194 mphMax Speed: 202 mphRange: 619 nautical milesService Ceiling: 19,400 feetEmpty Weight: 6,454 poundsLength: 38 feet, 7 inchesHeight: 10 feet, 1 inch Earharts NR16020 Modifications Earhart took delivery of her Model 10E Electra on her 39th birthday. It was given the registration number NR16020 and would be the airplane shed attempt to fly around the world. She modified the aircraft dramatically for a long-haul flight. Fuel tanks were added to the wings and fuselage to accommodate for longer trip legs. After the modification, there were six fuel tanks in the wings and six in the fuselage. This allowed her to carry 1,150 gallons of fuel, enough for more than  20 hours of flight time at normal cruise. The aircraft  also was equipped with better radio equipment- a brand new Western Electric radio and a Bendix radio direction finder, which were high-tech gadgets for the time period. One final modification included the addition of a Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) for Morse code capability. There are only a few Electra Model 10 aircraft left today. Most are on display at museums.
